A Norman castle where Henri IV slept before the battle of Ivry!
Near Verneuil-sur-Avre, discover the Castle of Hellenvilliers from the 16th and 17th century. Its origin dates back to the 9th century. A warrior named Herland created a site there to protect himself from Viking invasions. The oldest wing of the present castle dates from the Renaissance period. It is supported by a chapel, behind which is a watchtower and outbuildings from the same period. The central body of the early 17th century was a gallery which connected the Renaissance wing to an old postern. It has been converted into reception rooms in the 18th arrondissement. The right wing, which closes the U-shaped courtyard, is at the beginning of the 18th century. On the way to Ivry, in 1590, Henri IV spent a night in the castle, before giving battle there a month later, against the League of the Duke of Mayenne ...
